Contain the water before you trace it

  • Put towels at the cabinet front and protect flooring seams before removing drawers full of water or ice.

Stage a five-minute dry-floor stakeout

You are not waiting for another flood. You are setting a few simple witnesses in the places where each leak path would reveal itself.

  • Photograph the loaded compartment so shelves and bins go back correctly. Remove the drawers and any shelf piece the model instructions say is user-removable; do not flex stubborn trim.
  • Dry the drawer bottoms, cabinet floor, rear seam, both side walls, and the underside of the shelf above. Sticky or colored residue is spill evidence.
  • Place small dry paper-towel tabs at the rear center and below any visible tube, reservoir, filter housing, or coupling. Keep them clear of vents and moving parts.
  • Restore normal operation and check after ordinary door use. If the refrigerator has a dispenser, watch the visible tubing area while a helper dispenses one glass of water; stop immediately if a fitting leaks.
  • If fine droplets gather at the front instead of one drip point, clear anything holding the door open, clean the gasket, and compare paper-strip grip at several spots.

Rear-center water: follow the defrost path, but do not force it

  • Look for a narrow ice ridge, a wet rear seam, or clear water tracking forward from the same spot after the floor was dried.
  • If the drain trough and opening are plainly exposed by normal drawer or shelf removal, inspect for loose debris or light surface ice without probing into a hidden tube.
  • Let accessible ice soften with the refrigerator unplugged and towels in place. Use only the cleaning method in the model's owner or service instructions.
  • Do not assume a hole in the liner is the drain. Do not pour boiling water, chemicals, bleach, or a large volume of water into an opening you cannot positively identify.
  • If the path is hidden, the cover is frozen in place, or ice returns after a complete thaw, record the pattern and arrange model-specific drain or defrost service.

Side-wall water: catch the pressurized leak in the act

Many dispenser-equipped refrigerators hide chilled-water tubing or a reservoir beside the fresh-food compartment. One tiny fitting can feed a very convincing puddle under the drawers.

  • Dry the side wall and visible water components, then observe them while one glass is dispensed. A drop that forms during or just after dispensing is strong supply-leak evidence.
  • Check the filter housing and filter seating only as the owner manual directs. A recently changed, cross-threaded, incorrect, or damaged filter can redirect water inside the cabinet.
  • If a tube, reservoir, coupling, or housing leaks, close the refrigerator water shutoff. Do not keep dispensing to prove what is already visible.

A wall of frost changes the whole job

A thin rear-floor trail with normal cooling is a drain clue. A snowy, bowed, or solidly iced rear panel with weak airflow is the refrigerator asking for a different diagnosis.

  • Move perishables if the refrigerator is warming or airflow has fallen noticeably.
  • Do not keep clearing only the visible floor ice. A failed defrost component, airflow obstruction, sensor problem, or recurring freeze-up can keep feeding the puddle.
  • Do not force off a panel held by ice. Wiring, clips, fans, and refrigerant tubing may be directly behind it.

  • Do not order a control board for a puddle with no control symptoms.
  • Do not replace the door gasket because it looks dirty; clean it and test its grip first.
  • Do not keep running the refrigerator when water is reaching flooring seams, cabinetry, a power strip, or an outlet.
